Mysore S. Anil Kumar, MD, FRCS, FACS, is Professor of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Transplantation at Hahnemann University Hospital, both in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr Kumar received his medical degree from the University of Mysore in India. Postdoctoral training included a rotating medical/surgical internship at Medical College Hospital in Mysore and a year as General Medical Officer at Joshi Memorial Hospital in New Delhi, India. Subsequently, he served residencies in orthopedic surgery and general surgery at Royal East Sussex Hospital in Hastings, England, and jn neurosurgery, general surgery, vascular surgery, urology, and orthopedic surgery at South East London Regional Hospitals, England. At Redhill General Hospital in Surrey, England, he was Chief Resident and completed a fellowship in vascular surgery, general surgery, and urology, which was followed by a fellowship in kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation, clinical/experimental surgery, immunosuppression, basic science, laboratory research in islet transplantation and vascular surgery at Kuwait University Teaching Hospitals in Kuwait City.
Actively involved in clinical research in transplant recipients, Dr Kumar has participated in and completed 30 studies on nearly every aspect of kidney and pancreas transplantation. He has also functioned as Principal Investigator in multiple studies of immunosupressants in kidney transplantation. A fellow of the Royal College of Surgery (Edinburgh, Scotland) and the American College of Surgery, Dr Kumar is a member of numerous professional societies, including The Transplantation Society, The Society for Organ Sharing, The British Transplantation Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Association for Academic Surgery, American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the United Network for Organ Sharing.
Dr Kumar is a peer reviewer for American Journal of Transplantation, Expert Opinion on Biological Therapy, and Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology. He has contributed nearly 200 publications to the scientific literature, including 90 journal articles, 15 books or book chapters, and 82 abstracts.
