Arthur J. Matas, MD

Arthur J. Matas, MD, is Professor of Surgery and Director of the Renal Transplant Service at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He is a surgical staff member of the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic. Dr Matas received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba College of Medicine in Winnipeg, Canada. He completed an internship and residency in surgery and a fellowship in transplantation at the University of Minnesota Hospitals.

Dr Matas is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, American Society of Transplantation, International Society of Transplantation, Association for Academic Surgery, American Society of Nephrology, and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, for whom he served as president in 2006.

Dr Matas’ current clinical interests are kidney transplant surgery, and his research interests include immunosuppressive drugs and transplant complications. Author or coauthor of nearly 1200 journal articles, book chapters, books, and abstracts, he is a member of the editorial boards of Clinical Transplantation, Transplantation, Pediatric Transplantation, and is Deputy Editor of American Journal of Transplantation. A frequent lecturer, he presents both nationally and internationally on issues in transplantation.
